How can Hundred Kinesiology Tapes Help with Menstrual Cramps?

While this piece is being written by a man - the person wielding the pen (or rather the keyboard and extraordinary prenatal cortex coordination) has had to live his fair share of menstrual cramps or period cramps through the women in his life.

Every time this unnecessary and unwelcome monthly visitor would visit my girlfriend or my sister, I could see the undeniable pain they go through with a never-complaining attitude. Why no complaints? Well, it’s “habitual”.

In the past, when these cramps would come knocking and manifest themselves in the form of anger, irritability, or straight-up discomfort, I acted rather insensibly - like any other man. It is after a drop of luck and various blog posts on the internet - I came about the fact that menstrual cramps are a big deal and should not be habitual.

The Initial Research

I started researching how one can mitigate these monthly pain-causers. To know the how, I had to process the why and the what.

Why are period cramps a characteristic feature of periods in women?
What causes these cramps to be so intense?

The 'why’ had a lot of points each pointing to a common cause - hormones.

The ‘why’ was the causal factor of ‘what’.

This excerpt from Mayo Clinic’s website explains the what and the why perfectly:
Hormonelike substances (prostaglandins) in pain and inflammation trigger uterine muscle contractions. Higher levels of prostaglandins are associated with more severe menstrual cramps.

This excerpt from WebMD answers the ‘what’ in most layman's terms:
Menstrual cramps happen because of contractions in the uterus, or womb, which is a muscle.

Supposed Solutions

Because of period cramps’ “pseudo-habitual nature”; which is a direct effect of a natural process; they cannot be completely won over. On the internet, you can find many supposed solutions - which are mostly marketing gimmicks to buy the women in your life gifts they might not need; such as; dark chocolates, hot water beds, massagers, and painkillers.

Now, the effectiveness of these solutions varies. However, on further research, I found that painkillers cause hormonal disbalance at a greater level. This effectively means that if you get rid of your period pain through painkillers, they will come back with vengeance in the next cycle.

A Real Solution

After trying to be a sensitive boyfriend and caring brother, I realized the solution to menstrual cramps was right under my nose.

Kinesiology Tapes.

Kinesiology Tapes offer a non-invasive, drug-free way to alleviate menstrual cramps, making them an excellent addition to your pain management toolkit.

Understanding Kinesiology Tapes

Kinesiology tapes are elastic therapeutic tapes that support and stabilize muscles and joints without restricting movement. Originally designed for athletes to aid in injury prevention and recovery, these tapes have found broader applications in pain management, including menstrual cramps.

How Kinesiology Tape Works for Menstrual Cramps

The contraction of the uterine muscles during periods is what causes menstrual cramps. The lower back and thighs may experience pain as a result of these contractions. Kinesiology tapes are beneficial in several ways:

  1. Pain Relief: By applying kinesiology tape to the lower abdomen and lower back, the tape gently lifts the skin, which may reduce pressure and improve blood and lymphatic flow in the taped area. This can help reduce the sensation of pain.

  2. Muscle Support: The tape provides support to the abdominal muscles, which can help ease the muscle contractions and reduce the intensity of cramps.

  3. Improved Circulation: Enhanced blood and lymphatic flow can help reduce inflammation and promote healing, offering relief from pain and discomfort.
